Early Childhood Day, March 15, 2001

Each year, a special day is set aside to bring early childhood issues to the attention of VT lawmakers. Early Childhood Day brings child care providers, experts from the field, organizations that work with children & families together in Montpelier. Keynote Speaker, Louise Stoney spoke on the diverse systems in place to support housing, transportation and college education and the possibility of applying those principles to the child care system to provide early education. Panel Discussions, tours of the Statehouse and lunch with local legislatures keep the focus on the children and the critical first 5 years of life.

Jan Walker, Statewide Coordinator for the Child Care Apprenticeship Program, joins a panel discussion on initiatives launched in VT to improve the quality of child care. Her work on development of the Apprenticeship Program has brought together key partners from the US Department of Labor and the Department of Employment & Training and unlikely allies (such as plumbers, electricians and trade unions) to the table to support this child care initiative.
