Meet The Participants

Robin's Nest Children's Center, Burlington

Robin’s Nest Children’s Center is located in the Old North End of Burlington and serves children from the age of 6 weeks through 9 years. The Center shares space with St. Joseph’s School on Allen St and has successfully expanded their infant program through a collaborative Chittenden County grant with the VT Child Care Services Division. Robin’s Nest received their NAEYC national accreditation in February 2000. Robin’s Nest is also part of a partnership with other Chittenden County child care programs working with the Vermont Department of Education to provide preschool experiences to children attending their program.

Director Lou Ann Beninati writes: "Robin’s Nest supports staff development in various ways and at all levels of training. We feel that participating in the Child Care Apprenticeship Program will further promote quality care and staff retention at Robin’s Nest. Holly and Judy will be working together in the Infant/Toddler classrooms."

Apprentice Holly Chamberlain began working at Robin’s Nest in September 1997. “I think everyone would benefit by my work as an apprentice because I would be able to communicate more effectively with the families @ Robin’s Nest by learning more about children’s development.”

Mentoring Teacher Judy Severy has 10 years experience in child care and has earned her Associate’s Degree in Early Childhood Education from Champlain College. She is continuing in College Courses, working towards a Bachelor Degree in ECE. Judy completed Apprenticeship sponsored coursework, through Union Institute and University, in 2003 to broaden her skills as a mentor and effective supervisor. “The Apprenticeship Program will be a great learning experience and an opportunity for me to share my knowledge of Early Childhood Education and skills. I have a strong knowledge of child development and working with families. These skills will help Holly grow and develop into a great child care provider.”
