Overview of the VT Child Care Apprenticeship Program

The primary goal of the Vermont Child Care Apprenticeship Program is to recruit and retain a highly trained and competent workforce, thereby improving services to children and families.  This will be accomplished through two major activities.

Both activities are overseen and supported by the Vermont Child Care Industry and Careers Council, Inc.

Activity One
Create a child care industry driven Registered Child Care Apprenticeship Program that includes coordinated and appropriate higher education coursework.

Activity Two
Develop resources to maintain the Apprenticeship Program and the Child Care Apprenticeship Endowment Fund, which will become a sustainable independent source of funding to ensure increased compensation for apprentices and their Mentors.

Components of this activity include developing and supporting the following:

  • Related instruction (Coursework)
  • Work process (Clearly identified skills and standards for on-the-job-activities)
  • Higher education partnerships
  • Clear academic pathways
  • Systems for statewide program coordination

  • Systems for orientation and support for the apprentice, mentor and employe
  • Resources for all of the above

Regional Committees will do the following:

  • Help ensure that the Vermont Child Care Apprenticeship Program related instruction coordinates with other community education and training activities.
  • Assist in identifying appropriate training/education providers.
  • Work with regional businesses and Workforce Investment Boards to ensure coordination and support of regional economic goals.
